The article examines contemporary approaches to assessing the innovation development potential of industrial enterprises and analyses macroeconomic trends that shape this potential in Ukraine. The study systematises key methodological groups, including quantitative indicator-based models, expert assessment methods, hybrid integrated approaches, econometric models, and innovation readiness frameworks. Special attention is given to the extent to which these methods incorporate digitalisation factors, such as IT infrastructure, digital skills, organisational digital culture and the maturity of enterprise digital ecosystems.
The paper demonstrates that existing assessment tools differ substantially in conceptual logic, data requirements and applicability to industrial sectors, which necessitates their adaptation to national economic conditions. To complement methodological analysis at the enterprise level, the study evaluates macroeconomic indicators of innovation activity in Ukraine, including innovation expenditures, the share of innovative enterprises, and the adoption of digital systems such as ERP and CRM. The results reveal declining and unstable investment in innovation, low diffusion of digital technologies, and significant disparities between large and small enterprises.
Comparison with global practices, particularly in the implementation of artificial intelligence, highlights similar challenges: enterprises can initiate exploratory and pilot projects, yet encounter substantial barriers in transitioning to full-scale implementation. Despite the growing importance of digitalisation, Ukrainian industrial enterprises face limitations related to data availability, infrastructure and organisational readiness.
The findings enable the identification of enterprise categories by innovation activity level, the determination of structural constraints, and the formulation of requirements for an adapted method of assessing innovation development potential. Developing such a method, tailored to Ukraine’s industrial context and real digitalisation patterns, constitutes the next stage of the research.
