Abstract

The article examines the historical and theoretical foundations of the university ecosystem within the interaction of education, science, business and government. It focuses on the university’s first mission, namely the preservation and transmission of knowledge through teaching and learning, as a foundation for its research and societal activities. The purpose of the article is to synthesise the historical prerequisites for the emergence of the university’s first mission and to identify its role in the development of the contemporary university ecosystem. The discussion covers European and American academic traditions, the establishment of educational institutions in Ukrainian territories, the activities of brotherhood schools and the development of university education. The educational mission is shown to support the continuity of knowledge, the preparation of qualified professionals and the preservation of cultural heritage, while its content evolves in response to societal needs. The article considers the importance of humanities and natural science education, the liberal arts tradition and the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills in developing critical thinking and professional competencies. It describes the relationship between the educational mission, scientific research and the third mission, which encompasses service to society and engagement with businesses and local communities. The expansion of universities’ societal functions does not diminish the importance of teaching and learning; it requires their coordination with research activities and societal expectations. Graduates’ ability to acquire new knowledge and apply it in professional practice is identified as an important prerequisite for universities’ contribution to socioeconomic development. The article concludes that the first mission remains a foundation of academic life and of the university ecosystem. The practical relevance of the discussion lies in its potential use when considering the role of universities in Ukraine’s post-war recovery and identifying directions for their engagement with society.
